Village Maria - Sidewalk Cafe Pizzeria - Calamari Slice

As voted previously, Village Maria on Nelson ave has won the “Best Specialty Slice”.  We finally have couple of photos of the view and the delicious looking & tasting calamari slice.  This slice had no special treatment, meaning it was not prepared for the photos, we just asked for 2 slices and took the photos “Secretly”, and here it is.  This slice has put this restaurant into the “Staten Island HOT SPOTS Lists” which can be navigated to from the right hand navigation.

Looking at it makes me want a slice now.  Here is the link to the Menu & Photos of this restaurant: Village Maria Restaurant Page

Finally a bit of Island Restaurant News

New pizzeria coming to Richmond Ave/Arthur Kill corner where we used to have Emiliana’s (lasted for about 3 months).  Stratta, previous manager of Joe & Pat’s, Maybe we can get some Thin Crust around this area? Don’t know when this will be opening but we can all begin to wait (The sign was just posted outside about 3 days ago).

In the same area Planet Wings, the franchise that is already running on Hylan Blvd and Forest Ave has recently opened up right next to All-Star-Cafe, The menu will be coming very shortly.  The owners of planet wings seem to chose great location and at the rate they are going will probably be opening one in the court house area (10301) sometime in the next few years.

We are also patiently awaiting the grand opening of Lava Lounge, mentioned a few months ago which will be replacing the old Waterloo (Bar), this time it should be a Restaurant & Bar.  More on this to come when they open up.  For now, if I missed any other restaurant news, please comment.

Darina Cafe - Private Catering Party Review

Maybe a little bit out of the ordinary review coming from Whereyoueat, this time we have reviewed a private party event at Darina Cafe.

The Menus & Photos Located:  Darina Cafe Menu Page

Food: Delicious
Presentation: Excellent
Service: Up to par
Overall Sum-Up:  A comfortable dining room makes this place perfect for (Around 50 people) private party.

The Review:  Darina Cafe is on the Russian cuisine side and the appetizers were set-up when all the guests arrived.   You are able to chose your own menu before hand to see what will be laid out on the table.  The food was overloaded, tremendous number of cold appetizers which includes salads, seafood salads, shrimp cocktails, eggplants and other small sides which already filled everybody up (No we didn’t start yet).
Soon after there was dancing/music and speeches/toasts going around to get everybody in the mood for the party.
More food was already coming out and this time it was Warm Appetizers: Mussels, Shrimp, Fish (Boneless, the only way I like it).  During the party there was enough breaks for more dancing and really felt relaxed and non-rushed at all, kind of felt like an at home party, the whole crows was not wild but just right and you can always thank the restaurant for creating that type of feeling for all the guests.
Continuation on the food:  The entrees were beginning to come out, (Shish-Kebabs, Chicken Kebabs, Lamb Chops & Some warm pastries (Russian cuisine consists of many Mediterranean items).
We were all overstuffed by then but for some reason everyone seemed to find room for dessert, actually there was two desserts.
(1) Cakes, all different kind such as chocolatey moose swirls, banana style pastries…
(2) The Ice Cream: Warm Blueberry and Apple Pastries with ice cream piled on in the middle.  (Just the perfect ending).

This was my Sisters Birthday Party, So I had to include a picture.

There was plenty of food to take home.  The whole setting was nice and every person received a small Gift Bag (Chocolate with Mini Cognac bottle).  We had a live band (Must be hired separately) but the restaurant owner will help you arrange this.  The balloons that you see in the pictures were all custom and also arranged without the restaurant.  (If interested in finding out where we got those balloons, or for any other inquiries, contact me, Alex: Alex@Whereyoueat.com)

We hope your dining experience was as pleasant as ours. Thank you for reading and until next time: WhereYouEat.com

Ay Caramba! Muy Bueno!!

The Menu is Located Here:  Caramba Cafe Menu & Photos

A Mexican Restaurant & Bar up for Review.  Caramba Cafe located on 163 Dongon Street, 10310, Port Richmond, Staten Island.  Talking to a few people around here can tell you that this place is nick-named “Little Mexico”.  Ethnic places fill up Port Richmond Ave, with great food to be found in almost any place we have tried so far.  Tacos La Abuelita which is opened until 5am on the weekends and Ricuerdas or Los Potrillas.  All Authentic Mexican establishments.

Now comes the latest Grand Opening of “Caramba Cafe”: Greatly designed and well suited establishment off the major strip on a quiter block.  A Small “Mini-Bar” with about 6 - 7 Chairs in the front, Dining room with many tables and a Dancing floor (If you ever decide to bring your date out here).
Off the Bat: Mexican Ethnic Establishments usually are more lively, which includes music playing, people dancing (Any nite of the week), patrons litterly are “Stayin’ Alive”.  The place is very comftorable, you do not need to speak Spanish to visit a Mexican Restaurant.

Food & Service:   The waitress was very friendly (Watch out for the Pen, it Stings!!!),  The ordering process was fun, Language barrier was interesting to get by and made it feel much more authentic.  The food ordered and tried was (Bistek a la Mexicana, Pork Ribs & Another meal), Tortillas were served on the side in a plastic container to keep it warm (by the end of the meal the tortillas were somehow still amazingly hot?).
The Food was just delicious, every part of the meal (I ordered spicy) was so tasty, came with a side of beans, rice & a whole lot of flavour.   The other two meals, Carnitas Ribs (Pork Ribz) came on a bone but was very easy to remove.  The meat just slid right off and came straight into the tortilla, add the sides and toppings and just have a taste.  This is not done yet, there is still another meal: Pork chop in Sauce.  Readers and Patrons Beware!!!!, The Sauce is Hot!  With my tortilla I have dipped in to try the (Orange) looking sauce to find my tounge burning (Corona Didn’t Help!!!).  For spicy food lovers, this may be a great meal.   Mexican food is naturally a bit spicy and so was my meal, but this is on the WoW! Factor.

Anyways I will definantly be back to visit this place and may even write a follow up review.  But for now if you want to try something out of the ordinary, with a nice comtorable atmosphere, try Caramba Cafe.

The Mango Tree (Thai & Japanese Cuisine)

The Menu Located: The Mango Tree

The Mango Tree has been open on Staten Island since September. It is a great addition of ethic Thai food that also offers Japanese/Sushi Cuisine. Currently with only two other establishments offering Thai Cuisine, we welcome this restaurant greatly with open hands.

The Walk-Around: Upon entrance there are a few seats to the right, Where you can sit down to wait for some take out. To the right there is a buetifal Sushi Bar, which can make an excellent Lunch Time Stop By. The best part of the Restaurant is of course the dining room which features an authentic look/feel of Bricks, Romantic dim atmosphere and enough room between tables to breath. Tables have a great well thought set-up to allow for a “Crowded Free Experience” and are not set up on top of each other.

Good For: (This is not a Restaurant Review, only a Grand Opening Description): This restaurant seems to be good for Lunch & Dinner, Lunch being nice and simple stop by either sitting at Sushi bar or in the Dining Room. Dinner being more on the Romantic side with dim lights and candles at tables. This place also offers Delivery of both Cuisines (Thai & Japanese).

Latest News This Week

Lava Lounge is now being built on Arthur Kill road to replace the old Waterloo lounge. The sign says “Bar & Restaurant” will surely be welcome here for another place to hang out with some drinks at night. We hope the owners go right about it by creating daily specials, game nights, karaoke. Then we can almost guarantee a welcome stay (Even in this economy, Actually if we do our history research we can almost certainly see that alcohol sales are up doing recessions.) Other restaurant and bars with drink specials on Staten Island include (Big Nose Kate’s, Adobe Blues, Chick-n-Bones, dugouts, Beer Garden) Am I missing any? The restaurant 101 has been reopened under Nova Italian Bistro, for about a week now, read there description under the Staten Island grand opening section of this blog. Anyway till next time (More news worth writing about) and awaiting the opening of Lava Lounge.

Nove (Italian Bistro) (Replacing 101)

The Menu: http://whereyoueat.com/NY/StatenIsland/10312/DineIn/Nove.html

101 has been closed for quite some time now about 2 months. Emails began pouring in as if we have any information about this restaurant and why it is still listed on whereyoueat. We spoke to the owner and said they are temporarily closed while renovating. We figured they would be closed for a few weeks and re open under the same name. But they had different plans and re opened under a different name. “Nove Italian Bistro”. We have finally toured this place since its opening about one week ago. The reason for the name change was that 101 was not as popular here on Staten Island as it is in Brooklyn. (Yes, same owner).

The walk around: It is a Italian Bistro Style Restaurant with bar.
A great addition with a simple 2 page menu found on the menu page under Italian, Bistro and 10312 of http:/www.whereyoueat.com
The bar has remained where it is and minor changes to it from the old place. Has a new great light atmosphere, which changed from the darker style then before. Mirrors in the front with 2 tables. A wonderful style dining atmosphere, looks great and ceilings make this place stand out.

Nove Italian Bistro is only open for Dinner, closed Mondays, serves alcohol and features a full bar menu.
